As parents, we all want to be involved in our children’s education. We want to know that our students are receiving the best schooling possible and that the environment that we are sending them off into is nurturing and positive. Over the last several decades, public schools have started to receive a bad rap, being accused in some cases of providing a sub-standard education to children whose parents cannot afford a private school education. One link that many public school administrators have been able to make though is that the more involved the parents in their district are, the better the students in their district perform. What education should be is a chance for people to become independent, critical thinkers with the ability to discern new answers for themselves instead of passively accepting what currently exists.  This should happen by giving children the skills and intellect they need to grasp how the world works and how they can survive in it.  Unfortunately, the United States educational system is full of problems and currently not delivering such intellectual minds into the world. No system is perfect.  Unfortunately, the United States educational system is far from it.  One of the biggest problems today is the huge focus on test scores and grades.  Policy makers are obsessed with getting the US at the top of international test rankings.  The preoccupation of achieving high test scores has been placed under a different name: “student achievement.”  Educators are always talking about increasing levels of student achievement, but all they mean is they are pursuing higher test scores.
